2020 goals for business + life

Whew!

What a whirlwind the beginning of 2020 has been so far!

I’m writing this blog at the beginning of February 2020 and honestly, I almost skipped it all together. I wrote down my goals for 2020 a while back and have been meaning to get this blog post out there but due to our hectic transition to full time RV living at the beginning of the year (read more about that if you like HERE) I just haven’t made the time to sit and put this blog post together.

BUT, I do think it’s important to document your goals and I really do enjoy posting it on a more public place in order to help keep myself accountable.

I also think it’s interesting to see the goal process that others go through and see what sorts of things others are looking to accomplish during a year so hopefully if you are reading this you can get some benefit out of it as well!

Ok shall we dive in?!? Here we go!

2020 goals - Business + Life

Business Goals

Same as last year, most of my goals center around making a specific amount per month as my net salary. In order for Paul and I to live and travel full time we have determined a monthly amount that my business needs to bring in as a salary.

While I love helping and serving other photographers and business owners and my purpose in business is much broader than just bringing home a paycheck, money is still a HUGE part of why I’m running a business. This is my full time job and so I need to be crystal clear on what amount I need to bring in.

Income Goal for 2020

$60,000 salary and profit - $150k in gross earnings

What that looks like practically is $3k/month net. That equals $36k per year in salary. I have an additional goal of bringing in $6k in PROFIT each quarter which ends up being $24k total profit for the year. If you are confused about the difference in PROFIT vs. SALARY I would suggest you looking into joining the Circle on Demand because it is a subject we will be discussing a lot!

In order to take home $60k in salary and profit I have to make WAY more than that due to the expenses of running a business including: taxes, paying my contractors and allllll the other things that go into running a business. These expenses add up quickly and although I am hyper aware of my expenses and do everything in my power to keep them as low as possible, I still need to bring home an amount well above $60k in order to reach my goals. With the projected expenses I have forecasted for this year I need to be at around $150k gross to reach my goals.

Sales/Launch Goals

In order to make my income goals I have to sell my services right? That is a combination of my private photo editing and my business coaching services.

Breaking down the intricacies of my editing business is too complicated to share here, but ultimately I have all of the projections I need to meet in order to maintain and grow that side of my business from an income standpoint and am on track to meet what I need to make from that side of my business.

On the coaching/educational side of my business I have three main initiatives: Cinnamon Circle, Circle on Demand and 1:1 coaching.

  • Circle on Demand: Launch the program twice during the year and sell 20 seats for each launch period

  • The Cinnamon Circle: Sell 6-8 seats for round 2 of my group coaching/mastermind program

  • Private 1:1 coaching: 6 1:1 coaching sessions available throughout the year. (This number is way down from last year because the price has gone up and I have less time to focus on 1:1 clients. The majority of my efforts will be going into my two group programs.)

Business Growth Goals

Of course, my own personal business growth and education is of major importance to me and I want to keep this at the forefront of what I am working on as eventually (longer term) my dream goals would be to write and speak as my main income generators. I know I have a long way to go towards that goal ut I need to work on these things NOW in order to make strides in the future. So for this year I would like to book two-three speaking engagements for 2020 or 2021.

Personal Goals

Personal goals are obviously just as important as business goals so I want to make sure I’m still tracking on various things that are important to me, and to me and Paul in general. Since we are doing SO MUCH this year in terms of travel (our entire lives are pretty much turned upside down) I have less but higher importance goals that I am focusing on.

Health/Mind

  • Lose 40 lbs - our focus on health and weight loss is still of great importance to us even though we haven’t been talking about it nearly as much. I lost just around 50lbs switching to a low carb/no sugar/ keto type of diet and Paul lost quite a bit of weight as well. Since then, things have stalled a bit (which they tend to do as your body becomes used to your new way of eating) and things have also gotten somewhat lax with the amount of travel we have done. While it’s totally possible to continue this lifestyle change on the road it can be challenging when you are eating out way more than normal and having to talk about/explain it on the regular. One thing that is for certain, keeping carbs and sugar out of my diet keeps me feeling amazing, sleeping well and my energy levels are much higher so despite the difficulties, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. This year as we travel, we plan to do lots more activities and spend more time outside walking, hiking and bike riding so that plus continued focus on fueling my body with what it works best with I hope to climb down the scale and make it back to onederland and feel even better throughout this year!

  • Read 30 books - last year I clocked in right at 50 books read and while I really enjoyed that challenge, I need to scale it back this year. I found myself reading books just to hit the goal and not because I was honestly super interested in reading them. I discovered a love of audiobooks through my library app so that helped for sure, but I think scaling back this number a bit will help keep me focused on books that I really am interested in reading and will also help me continue to focus on reading to learn and reading to relax and enjoy.

Focused on the Road

As Paul and I transition to life on the road we have thought about a lot of ways that we can not only document our journey but also potentially turn that into inspiration for others to do the same (or just bring everyone along for the ride!). We know that monetization is possible so while that’s not our main motivation right now, it is in the back of our minds as we think about growing our YouTube channel in and effort to share, inspire and document.

  • Grow YouTube: would love to see 1,000 subs by the summertime and potentially end the year at over 2,000 subs. Would like to grow our instagram as well, but no specific number in mind, would rather use that outlet to connect with other full time travellers

  • Exploration goals: visit 10 national parks, play golf in 20 states, visit friends and family all over the US.

Alrighty!! That’s it for my 2020 goals. I am so looking forward to this year and all it has to offer. I can’t wait to do a check in blog post at the middle and end of the year so I can see how far we have come!

What is one big goal you have for 2020? I’d love for you to share in the comments!
