Top Tips for consistent photo editing

As a wedding photographer, you are likely familiar with the importance of consistent photo editing. After all, your clients expect their photos to look professional, and that means having each photo edited in the same style. But if you’re not sure how to get your photos to all look the same, here are some tips for consistent photo editing.

Focus on your shooting

Any good editor will tell you that the absolute best way to get consistent editing is to be a more consistent shooter. It is easier to fix minor errors in shooting than it is to work a photo to death in post processing. While a lot of photography education really focuses on looking at your shots while your shooting to correct and correct until you get it right in camera, sometimes its actually better to just keep shooting “wrong” especially if you are in the same lighting environment. Changing your settings from photo to photo will translate into an editing nightmare. If you have 20 photos that are shot slightly “off” you can work on ONE of those photos until they look right and then sync with the rest. Otherwise you will have to spend all that time on each individual photo until they all look the same. NIGHTMARE.

Use a Preset

Once you feel good about consistent shooting and once you have a relatively solid style you are aiming for, it’s time to create your own custom preset. Most photographers will find they are adjusting the same things from photo to photo. Save yourself the time and make those adjustments and then create a preset…this way you can either apply that preset upon import or you can simply start with that preset at the beginning of your editing to save the time and energy from changing each slider on each photo.

Make Adjustments as Necessary

No matter how carefully you plan out your editing process, there may be times when adjustments need to be made on individual images. This is perfectly fine! Just make sure that any adjustments are done in line with the overall vision for your photos so that they still maintain consistency across all of them. If necessary, take some time before finalizing each image to compare it against other already-edited images so that any discrepancies can be addressed quickly and easily. Try your best not to over-edit. This is one reason why hiring a photo editor can help. Their focus will be on consistency rather than individual image perfection. Sometimes it is difficult to remove your emotions from the editing process, an outside editor will be able to maintain an objective view of the consistency of your gallery. Looking for an editor?
